About the Department

A research department ranked among the very best in the world.

Founded as one of the earliest Information Systems departments in Asia, CityU IS has grown into a global force in research, consistently publishing in the leading IS journals. We sit at the intersection of business, technology and human behaviour — training people who don't just study systems, but reshape them.

Our teaching and research span artificial intelligence and analytics, financial and intelligent technology, cybersecurity, digital transformation, and the human side of computing — from HCI to the ethics of IT.

Our stance
We integrate AI into every part of student learning — so graduates don't just adopt tools, they lead firms through the AI era. Across fintech · analytics · cybersecurity · digital transformation, the test is the same: does the work change how someone does their job?

The department motto · five words
Smart people for smart business.

Five words our students keep coming back to. The first three are about a culture: people who think rigorously, work generously, and write things down so others can build on them. The last two are the world they're built to operate in — where data, models, and systems quietly run almost every business decision worth making.
